Is using your central air conditioning costing you a fortune?

There are many things that can cause your air conditioning system to run inefficiently. If your system used to cost a lot less to keep you comfortable, consider having one of our experienced technicians provide you with a professional central air conditioning tune-up. A good cleaning of your air conditioning system, the proper refrigerant charge, and an airflow analysis can get your cooling equipment back in shape, and give your pocket book a break.

Your Air Conditioner Is One Piece In a Bigger System

Because your cooling system isn't just an air conditioner, it is difficult to compare buying an air conditioner to buying a refrigerator or microwave. When you buy a refrigerator or microwave, you select one based on:

  • Cost
  • Features
  • Functions
  • Size
  • Efficiency
  • Appearance

When you buy an air conditioner, in addition to all of those things, you also have to consider all of the other pieces in the system:

  • A matched and properly sized blower and evaporator coil
  • Airflow efficiency (how well air moves through your cooling system to your rooms)
  • Air availability (how much air can move through your cooling system)
  • Effectiveness of air filtration BEFORE your equipment (leaky fittings and loose filters will cause dirt to build up in your system)
  • Air balance and delivery (is there sufficient air going to the rooms served?)
  • Ease of operation and maintenance
HOW your equipment is installed (the fittings, ductwork, and system design) is MORE IMPORTANT than the brand or model of equipment installed. Each brand and model of air conditioning equipment has specific strengths. We've chosen Lennox and Carrier as our equipment providers because they are innovative market leaders. We have found that they stand behind their products and provide us as a dealer with good service. We always consider the entire cooling system and don't take installation shortcuts.

Should you repair or replace your central air conditioner?

The answer to this question depends on what problem you are facing and what you are looking to accomplish. We've created some simple lists to help you evaluate your situation. Some of the items below may not be determining factors in your decision, but all should be points to consider in your evaluation to repair or replace your cooling system.

Consider repair:

  • Low cost of repair
  • Unit less than 10 years old
  • Unit has met your needs with minimal repairs
  • Unit is used infrequently
  • You are planning to move in the near future

Consider replacement or additional work:

  • Significant repair cost
  • Unit is over 10 years old
  • Unit has never met your needs
  • Unit requires frequent repair
  • Unit has a low efficiency rating or is expensive to operate
  • You aren't planning to move in the near future

Be cautious if you are considering an upgrade of residential central air conditioning equipment only to increase the unit efficiency to save money. Our climate has about 3-4 months of cooling season (but your home may be different), and unless it is a large or high usage unit, it is unlikely you will recoup the cost of installation in energy savings alone.

Are you thinking about buying a new central air conditioner?

If your air conditioning system is on its way to retirement or has never kept up with your needs, ask for an expert Gunthers sales consultant to give you the best options for your needs. We use special software to calculate the size of air conditioner your home needs. Ductwork is a major factor in the effectiveness and capability of your cooling system that is often overlooked, and we have the expertise to evaluate your complete cooling system.

We've partnered with Lennox and Carrier to offer you the most efficient and quiet air conditioning units available- up to 21 SEER (nearly 2x more efficient than a 12 SEER). Newer air conditioners can be significantly quieter than older units that are being replaced. When you couple your air conditioning system with a programmable thermostat, you can make sure your home is cool and ready for you to be comfortable. You can choose from a wide selection of simple or advanced programmable thermostats to help you save on your home energy costs.
