Utah Heating & Cooling Repair

If you've got a heating or cooling problem, you can always trust Gunthers to deliver the solutions you need. Our service department is on-call and available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to help you when you really need it. We give you up front flat rate pricing and our service technicians are paid competitive hourly wages - NOT a commission for parts or equipment they sell to you - so you know you are getting unbiased advice when they recommend a furnace or air conditioning repair.

How much does a repair call cost?

We believe in being completely up front about what our services will cost you. It is difficult for customers to find the best value because the final price for needed repairs isn't known until the diagnosis is complete. The bottom line: choose a company you can trust to make HONEST repair recommendations, and don't fall for pricing gimmicks. Ask family members, friends, and neighbors for service and repair company recommendations.

Five Gimmicks and Marketing Tactics to Avoid

We all love a good deal, and nobody wants to be ripped off. We've all seen (or been taken in by) bait and switch marketing. Our marketing stance: offer customers the best price we can up front, no pricing games or gimmicks. Here are a few pricing games and gimmicks you can be on the lookout for:

  • Extremely low or no cost diagnostic (typically have higher repair charges on the back end)
  • Extremely low cost maintenance specials (watch out for the list of repair items and recommended "not included" services)
  • Rolling the diagnostic into the repair cost (typically have higher repair charges on the back end)
  • Immediate discount or free goods for committing to buy new equipment or doing expensive repairs TODAY
  • Scare tactics with pressure to replace equipment instead of a focus on your repair and replacement options

We want to provide you with an expert education and then present you with your options and our recommendations. We will never use scare tactics, and will only condemn your equipment and shut it off if there is operational danger (such as unsafe levels of carbon monoxide). Be wary of any company that only visually shows you "problems" (like a cracked heat exchanger), and then works really hard to sell you new equipment.

Do you need a technician?

Sometimes it can be hard to know if you need to call for a furnace or air conditioning repair. Before you give us a call, run through the following checklist - It could save you some money!

1: Is there power to the unit(s)?

Check ALL the power switches and breakers (even at the furnace in cooling season - that is how air is pushed through the home). Common switch and breaker locations: At furnace, at condensing unit (outside), in breaker panel.

2: Is your thermostat calling for heating or cooling?

Most thermostats have a HEAT, COOL, and OFF setting. In order for your thermostat to tell the furnace to turn on, the thermostat needs to be in HEAT mode and the room temperature has to be below the set point. For cooling, it needs to be set to COOL and the room temperature needs to be above the set point.

3: Insufficient cooling or heating - Are there any obstructions to air flow?

Check the filter(s), make sure ALL vents/grilles are open and nothing is preventing air movement. If you have a high-efficiency furnace, make sure the intake and exhaust piping outside is clear as well. If the filter is clean and the ventilation system is free from obstructions, but the cooling or heating is still insufficient, arrange for a service repair call. If the system has never met your needs, the system may have inadequate ductwork or the equipment could be incorrectly sized - arrange for a free estimate.

4: For air conditioning - Is the outdoor coil and surrounding area clean?

If the outdoor coil is dirty, the unit will not cool efficiently. You should keep the area within 3 feet around the coil clear from plants and other debris. You can clean the coil with a gentle hose spray when the power to the unit is off, but we recommend a professional cleaning.

5: For air conditioning - Is the indoor coil freezing up?

Check for air flow obstructions (dirty filter, lots of closed vents, obstructed return air vents). If you find any of those problems, correct them, thaw the coil by running the system fan only (turn thermostat fan setting from AUTO to ON), WAIT until water stops draining, and try running the system again. If it freezes again, arrange for a service repair call.
